An example

Michaela was a great employee. She was loyal, she was a hard worker and she was a nice person. But nobody noticed her. Her impact on the company didn’t seem big, even though all the work that she did was great. She didn’t make a lasting impression on colleagues or clients.

It therefor wasn’t a big surprise that one day Michaela almost got fired. Her manager didn’t see her added value. What was she doing? When the manager gave her one last chance, she knew she had to take it. But how?

Michaela went out for lunch in the park. She thought about how to change things around.

In the park, she saw a young couple. A boy was trying to impress a girl. His technique clearly worked. The girl listened to his every word. What Michaela noticed was that the boy was telling stories. And the girl loved him for it.

That’s when Michaela realised what she had to do. If she wanted to make an impact, she had to tell stories.

At work, she started using stories. For every problem she found a story. And people started listening to her. They started noticing her. The stories brought trust and attention. It worked.

Six months after she was almost fired, Michaela got promoted. Six months that had turned her life around. A story she still tells friends at parties. Who all listen to every word she says.

The human species thinks in metaphors and learns through stories.

Mary Catherine Bateson

Most business and most speakers don’t use storytelling techniques, because they don’t know how. They don’t know how to create that perfect story. They lack the Storytelling skills. They think it’s hard work and some think they aren’t creative enough.

This is understandable. Creating a good story can be hard. It can take up a lot of time if you don’t know how to create that story. That’s why most storytelling efforts fail.
